Steps to undertake when applying for Italian Citizenship

Applying for Italian Citizenship requires a few basic steps. What must be done, the steps to undertake, and above all the issues to be faced and resolved.

This is a short guide to the procedure.

According if you are a Consular case, applying in Italy (residency), or going through a 1948 case in Court (attorney), these are the steps to present your file:  

  • Request records in Italy of the ancestor (BC and MC if applicable)
  • Request certified copies of the naturalization or CoNE of the Ancestor. You might also need a certified copy of the Census.

Applying for Italian Citizenship - Consular Path

  • Request all US vital records (BC, MC, and DC) of the bloodline. Some Consulates also require the non-bloodline. 
  • Request Apostille of the records. An "apostille" is an additional form of authentication issued to documents for use in countries that are signatories to the Hague Convention of 1961. It is advisable to use vital records no older than 5 to 10 years. Otherwise, there is a risk of rejection.
  • Have the vital records translated into Italian.

Applying for Italian Citizenship - in Italy

  • Request all US vital records (BC, MC, and DC) only of the direct bloodline
  • Request Apostille of the records
  • Have the vital records translated into Italian
  • Have the translations certified

Italian Citizenship under the 1948 rule

  • Request US vital records (BC, and MC, could also add DC) only of the direct bloodline 
  • Request Apostille of the records
  • Have the vital records translated into Italian
  • Have the translation certified
