WHAT THE LAW SAYS AS TO B1 LEVEL CERTIFICATE

The Italian government, in December 2018, revised the law governing the conditions for spouses qualifying for Italian citizenship through marriage. Are you the spouse of an Italian citizen and are applying for Italian citizenship through residency or marriage? Then, you must have a B1 Level Certificate.

BEING FLUENT IN THE ITALIAN LANGUAGE

The Italian B1 level language certification is an ‘intermediate’ level, indicating that you are fluent enough in the Italian language to live, study, and work in the community. It is one of six levels (from A1 to C2) of a Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL) test designed to demonstrate fluency in the Italian language. The Italian government accepts this certification as proof of intermediate language proficiency.

Please don’t worry! Intermediate ability does not imply perfect pronunciation and comprehension. Rather, it means you should be able to communicate and comprehend the essence of topics commonly encountered at work, school, travel, and recreational settings. Can you express basic concepts about yourself and your interests or describe events and experiences? If so, the B1 level will not be an issue.

But, if you need to assess your Italian skills and attain certainty, please reach out. You can improve your Italian or learn it by scratch with a professional mother-tongue teacher.

ITALIAN SAYING

Essere quattro gatti

Literal Translation: To be 4 cats.

English Idiom: To be a handful of people.

Meaning: here are only a few people.

Origin of this saying:  Wild cats gather in a small pack of 3-4-5 max. From here the saying is transferred to people when they gather, indicating that they are few.
